How I Organize My Notes
by a student at Manchester Metropolitan University
In my opinion, it is of primary importance to organise study materials before starting a revision session. For this reason I would have all required materials close to hand and if required, devise a revision timetable in order to make my study time both effective and efficient.
The next step would be to read through the material the exam is on. I always aim to read the text at least twice before putting pen to paper. This ensures I have a sound knowledge of the topic and when I am writing my notes there are not going to be any problem areas that stop the flow of writing that haven't been previously identified.
The third and arguably most important step in a revision session is of course making notes. I find that writing large pieces of text isn't very effective when referring to for study purposes.
For this reason I like to break my revision notes up into manageable paragraphs and highlight key phrases. Although I have divided my notes up into short paragraphs my notes are still extensive.
I find that the more I write, the more I remember, provided it is laid out correctly.
After many years of doing exams both open and closed book, I know I sometimes struggle to differentiate relevant information from waffle. However in exam situations I try to make my answers clear and concise as there are time restrictions.
In open book exams although it is still crucial to know the material, it is of equal importance to know the lay out of your notes as this will save you precious time flicking through endless notes.
